{"id":2575,"date":"2026-09-10T10:46:25","date_gmt":"2026-09-10T10:46:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sportmindcoach.co.za\/academy\/?p=2575"},"modified":"2026-09-10T10:46:25","modified_gmt":"2026-09-10T10:46:25","slug":"child-brain-development-youth-sport","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sportmindcoach.co.za\/academy\/child-brain-development-youth-sport\/","title":{"rendered":"Your Child&#8217;s Brain &#038; Sport: A Guide for Parents and Coaches"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1><strong>Your child\u2019s brain is changing, and so is the way they experience sport.<\/strong><\/h1>\n<h2 data-section-id=\"1llpyhx\" data-start=\"76\" data-end=\"160\">What parents and coaches should understand about young athletes from ages 6 to 18.<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"162\" data-end=\"231\">Your child\u2019s brain is not simply a smaller version of an adult brain. <strong data-start=\"233\" data-end=\"262\">It is under construction.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"264\" data-end=\"548\">As children move from early childhood through adolescence, their brains, bodies, emotions, identities and social worlds are developing at the same time. That means the way they experience training, competition, mistakes, winning, losing, selection, criticism and pressure changes too.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"550\" data-end=\"702\">A six-year-old, a twelve-year-old and a seventeen-year-old may all be playing the same sport, but psychologically they are playing very different games.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"704\" data-end=\"791\">Understanding these developmental stages can help parents and coaches stop asking only:<\/p>\n<blockquote data-start=\"793\" data-end=\"846\">\n<p data-start=\"795\" data-end=\"846\"><strong data-start=\"795\" data-end=\"846\">\u201cHow do we get this athlete to perform better?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p data-start=\"848\" data-end=\"865\">and start asking:<\/p>\n<blockquote data-start=\"867\" data-end=\"951\">\n<p data-start=\"869\" data-end=\"951\"><strong data-start=\"869\" data-end=\"951\">\u201cWhat does this young person need from us at this stage of their development?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p data-start=\"953\" data-end=\"978\">That distinction matters.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"980\" data-end=\"1024\">Because we are not only developing athletes.\u00a0<strong data-start=\"1026\" data-end=\"1055\">We are developing people.<\/strong><\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"1057\" data-end=\"1060\" \/>\n<h2 data-section-id=\"1pocjit\" data-start=\"1062\" data-end=\"1104\">Sport Is More Than Physical Development<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"1106\" data-end=\"1168\">Youth sport can be an extraordinary developmental environment.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1170\" data-end=\"1334\">Children learn to practise, cooperate, compete, communicate, make decisions, manage disappointment, take responsibility and perform while other people are watching.\u00a0But those experiences do not happen separately from brain development.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1408\" data-end=\"1696\">A young athlete may suddenly become more emotional, self-conscious, distracted or concerned about what teammates think. A previously confident child may start questioning whether they are good enough. Allow your child to experiment with different sports and positions. Avoid comparing them with other children, and don&#8217;t turn the drive home into a technical review of everything they did wrong.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3134\" data-end=\"3144\">Sometimes:<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3146\" data-end=\"3178\"><strong data-start=\"3146\" data-end=\"3178\">\u201cI loved watching you play.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3180\" data-end=\"3190\">is enough.<\/p>\n<h3 data-section-id=\"1g85ujf\" data-start=\"3192\" data-end=\"3215\">What coaches can do<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"3217\" data-end=\"3410\">Create short, engaging activities with plenty of movement and opportunities for success. He&#8217;s faster than me. Why was she selected?<br data-start=\"3964\" data-end=\"3967\" \/>Why wasn&#8217;t I? Am I good enough?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4004\" data-end=\"4087\">Sport can now start contributing more strongly to how children <strong>evaluate themselves.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4089\" data-end=\"4129\"><strong>This is where adults need to be careful.<\/strong>\u00a0When every conversation revolves around results, rankings, teams, medals and selection, a child can gradually learn:<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4249\" data-end=\"4273\"><strong data-start=\"4249\" data-end=\"4273\">Performance = worth is a dangerous equation.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3 data-section-id=\"6mnmbo\" data-start=\"4306\" data-end=\"4329\">What parents can do<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"4331\" data-end=\"4400\">Praise <strong>improvement and effort<\/strong> rather than repeatedly praising talent.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4402\" data-end=\"4525\">Help your child understand that <strong>mistakes provide information<\/strong>. <strong>Normalise disappointment<\/strong> and teach them how to respond to it.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4527\" data-end=\"4583\">When something goes wrong, <strong>resist immediately fixing<\/strong> it.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4585\" data-end=\"4589\">Try:\u00a0<strong data-start=\"4591\" data-end=\"4616\">\u201cWhat did you learn?\u201d\u00a0<\/strong>or <strong data-start=\"4623\" data-end=\"4677\">\u201cWhat would you like to do differently next time?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4679\" data-end=\"4718\">Most importantly, help them understand: <strong data-start=\"4722\" data-end=\"4780\">Sport is something you do. Believe it: the opinion of friends matters more.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"5614\" data-end=\"5669\">A friendship conflict at school can arrive at training.<br \/>\nFeeling excluded can arrive at training.<br \/>\nBody-consciousness can arrive at training.<br \/>\nSocial media can arrive at training.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"5795\" data-end=\"5874\">The young athlete does not simply leave these things outside the changing room.\u00a0This helps explain why a <strong>fearless ten-year-old can become a very self-conscious thirteen-year-old<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"5976\" data-end=\"6046\">It doesn&#8217;t necessarily mean they have suddenly become mentally weaker.\u00a0<strong data-start=\"6048\" data-end=\"6092\">Their world has just become more complicated.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3 data-section-id=\"6mnmbo\" data-start=\"6094\" data-end=\"6117\">What parents can do<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"6119\" data-end=\"6149\">Listen before trying to solve.\u00a0When behavior changes, become curious.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"6190\" data-end=\"6201\">Instead of:\u00a0<strong data-start=\"6203\" data-end=\"6241\">\u201cWhat&#8217;s wrong with your attitude?\u201d\u00a0<\/strong>try:\u00a0<strong data-start=\"6249\" data-end=\"6309\">\u201cYou don&#8217;t seem like yourself lately. But <strong>physical maturation, brain development, social expectations and peer dynamics can influence how young athletes experience sport.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"7367\" data-end=\"7488\"><strong>For some girls,<\/strong> puberty may bring increased body awareness, comparison, friendship dynamics and concerns about belonging.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"7490\" data-end=\"7592\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-2591\" src=\"https:\/\/sportmindcoach.co.za\/academy\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/Boys-and-Development_-Train-Understand-Develop-Crop-1024x760.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"345\" height=\"256\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sportmindcoach.co.za\/academy\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/Boys-and-Development_-Train-Understand-Develop-Crop-1024x760.png 1024w, https:\/\/sportmindcoach.co.za\/academy\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/Boys-and-Development_-Train-Understand-Develop-Crop-768x570.png 768w, https:\/\/sportmindcoach.co.za\/academy\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/Boys-and-Development_-Train-Understand-Develop-Crop-600x445.png 600w, https:\/\/sportmindcoach.co.za\/academy\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/Boys-and-Development_-Train-Understand-Develop-Crop-67x50.png 67w, https:\/\/sportmindcoach.co.za\/academy\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/Boys-and-Development_-Train-Understand-Develop-Crop.png 1190w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 345px) 100vw, 345px\" \/><strong>For some boys,<\/strong> changes in size, strength and speed can suddenly affect sporting status and confidence.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"7594\" data-end=\"7643\">And vulnerability doesn&#8217;t always look vulnerable.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"7645\" data-end=\"7672\">It can sometimes look like:<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"7674\" data-end=\"7757\"><strong data-start=\"7674\" data-end=\"7757\">Anger. Blaming. Withdrawal. Showing off. Risk-taking. \u201cI don&#8217;t care.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"7759\" data-end=\"7812\">The behaviour we see may not tell us the whole story.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"7814\" data-end=\"7824\">Sometimes: <strong data-start=\"7828\" data-end=\"7898\">\u201cI don&#8217;t care\u201d actually means \u201cI care so much that failing hurts.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"7900\" data-end=\"7973\">The responsibility of the adult is not to excuse inappropriate behavior. It is to <strong data-start=\"7984\" data-end=\"8036\">understand it well enough to respond effectively<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">That doesn&#8217;t mean adults should excuse disrespectful or inappropriate behaviour. It means we should become curious about <strong>what may be driving the behaviour<\/strong> before simply labelling the child.<\/p>\n<h2>What Parents Can Do<\/h2>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">Parents can provide something incredibly valuable during these developmental years: <strong>a safe place where performance does not determine worth.<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul data-spread=\"false\">\n<li><strong>Separate the child from the performance.<\/strong> A bad game is something that happened; it is not who your child is.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Reduce comparison.<\/strong> Avoid comparing your child&#8217;s body, speed, strength, selection or progress with teammates and siblings.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Be careful with post-match analysis.<\/strong> Immediately after competition is often not the best time for a technical interrogation.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Ask before advising.<\/strong> Try: <em>\u201cDo you want me to listen, or would you like my thoughts?\u201d<\/em><\/li>\n<li><strong>Notice changes in behaviour.<\/strong> Withdrawal, anger or suddenly \u201cnot caring\u201d may deserve a conversation rather than immediate criticism.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Normalise different development rates.<\/strong> Being smaller, slower or less physically developed today does not determine the athlete they can become.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Praise controllables.<\/strong> Effort, preparation, courage, discipline, learning and response to mistakes matter more than simply winning.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Keep home emotionally safe.<\/strong> Your child should know that your relationship with them does not rise and fall with their sporting performance.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">Sometimes the most powerful sentence a parent can say after a difficult performance is simply:\u00a0<strong>\u201cI loved watching you play. What do you need from me right now?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2>What Coaches Can Do<\/h2>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">Coaches have enormous influence during this developmental period because sport is often one of the places where young people begin forming beliefs about <strong>competence, identity and belonging.<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul data-spread=\"false\">\n<li><strong>Coach the developmental age, not only the chronological age.<\/strong> Two 13-year-olds can be at very different stages physically and emotionally.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Don&#8217;t mistake early physical maturity for greater potential.<\/strong> Bigger, stronger and faster young athletes are not automatically the athletes with the greatest long-term potential.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Avoid public comparison and humiliation.<\/strong> Correct the behaviour or skill without attacking the athlete&#8217;s identity.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Create psychological safety with accountability.<\/strong> Athletes should feel safe to make mistakes, ask questions and admit uncertainty \u2014 while still being expected to meet standards.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Look beneath behaviour.<\/strong> Anger, excuses, clowning around or disengagement may sometimes be protecting confidence.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Give athletes a pathway forward.<\/strong> Instead of only saying what went wrong, show them what they can work on next.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Reward courage and learning.<\/strong> Recognise athletes who attempt difficult skills, recover after mistakes and keep competing under pressure.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Watch your language.<\/strong> Young athletes often remember a coach&#8217;s words long after they have forgotten the score.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Make belonging bigger than selection.<\/strong> Being dropped, benched or moved between teams should not communicate: <em>\u201cYou don&#8217;t matter anymore.\u201d<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>The Adult&#8217;s Responsibility<\/h3>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">Whether we are parents or coaches, our responsibility is not to remove every disappointment, excuse poor behaviour or protect young athletes from every difficult experience.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">Our job is to help them <strong>understand what they are experiencing, develop the skills to deal with it, and gradually become capable of handling more for themselves.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">Instead of asking only:\u00a0<strong>\u201cWhat is wrong with this behaviour?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">Sometimes we need to ask:\u00a0<strong>\u201cWhat might this behaviour be telling me?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Because when adults understand the athlete behind the behaviour, we can still hold the standard, <strong>but respond in a way that helps the young person grow.<\/strong><\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"8286\" data-end=\"8289\" \/>\n<h1 data-section-id=\"194fli1\" data-start=\"8291\" data-end=\"8316\">Ages 15\u201318: \u201cWHO AM I?\u201d<\/h1>\n<p data-start=\"8318\" data-end=\"8367\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-2594\" data-start=\"8407\" data-end=\"8439\">\u201cWhat do you want me to do?\u201d\u00a0<\/strong>to\u00a0<strong data-start=\"8446\" data-end=\"8467\">\u201cWhat do I want?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"8469\" data-end=\"8535\">Older teenagers need increasing ownership of their sporting lives.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"8537\" data-end=\"8570\">That includes responsibility for:<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"8572\" data-end=\"8661\"><strong data-start=\"8572\" data-end=\"8661\">Training \u2022 Preparation \u2022 Goals \u2022 Discipline \u2022 Communication \u2022 Mistakes \u2022 Consequences<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"8663\" data-end=\"8744\">This can be difficult for parents who have spent ten years organising everything.\u00a0But development requires us to gradually hand responsibility back.<\/p>\n<h3 data-section-id=\"59xik\" data-start=\"8814\" data-end=\"8849\">The parent&#8217;s role should change<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"8851\" data-end=\"8882\"><strong data-start=\"8851\" data-end=\"8882\">MANAGER \u2192 GUIDE \u2192 SUPPORTER<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3 data-section-id=\"6mnmbo\" data-start=\"8884\" data-end=\"8907\">What parents can do<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"8909\" data-end=\"8974\">Let your teenager increasingly c<strong>ommunicate directly with coaches<\/strong> and allow them to manage more of their preparation and equipment.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"9039\" data-end=\"9103\">Ask about their goals instead of assuming your goals are theirs. Allow reasonable consequences and don&#8217;t rescue them from every uncomfortable situation.\u00a0You can support them without taking over.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"9239\" data-end=\"9260\">A useful question is:\u00a0<strong data-start=\"9262\" data-end=\"9300\">\u201cWhat do you think you should do?\u201d\u00a0<\/strong>That question develops ownership.<\/p>\n<h3 data-section-id=\"1g85ujf\" data-start=\"9337\" data-end=\"9360\">What coaches can do<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"9362\" data-end=\"9408\">Give older athletes <strong>meaningful responsibility<\/strong>.\u00a0Invite them into goal-setting conversations. Expect accountability. Explain why standards exist. Encourage athletes to evaluate their own performances before giving your assessment.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"9593\" data-end=\"9666\">The goal is no longer simply to produce athletes who follow instructions.\u00a0It is to develop athletes who can <strong data-start=\"9702\" data-end=\"9772\">think, regulate themselves, make decisions and take responsibility<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"9928\" data-end=\"9931\" \/>\n<h1 data-section-id=\"e8vcej\" data-start=\"9933\" data-end=\"9973\">What Parents and Coaches Often Misread<\/h1>\n<p data-start=\"9975\" data-end=\"10076\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-2597\" src=\"https:\/\/sportmindcoach.co.za\/academy\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/How-Parents-Misread-Teen-Development-crop-1024x622.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"345\" height=\"209\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sportmindcoach.co.za\/academy\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/How-Parents-Misread-Teen-Development-crop-1024x622.png 1024w, https:\/\/sportmindcoach.co.za\/academy\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/How-Parents-Misread-Teen-Development-crop-768x466.png 768w, https:\/\/sportmindcoach.co.za\/academy\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/How-Parents-Misread-Teen-Development-crop-600x364.png 600w, https:\/\/sportmindcoach.co.za\/academy\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/How-Parents-Misread-Teen-Development-crop-82x50.png 82w, https:\/\/sportmindcoach.co.za\/academy\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/How-Parents-Misread-Teen-Development-crop.png 1402w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 345px) 100vw, 345px\" \/>One of the biggest dangers in youth sport is interpreting every behavior through a performance lens.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"10078\" data-end=\"10102\">When young athlete becomes, <strong data-start=\"10104\" data-end=\"10195\">Emotional, Distracted, Defensive, Self-conscious, Frustrated and Less confident, <\/strong>the conclusion we come to is often,\u00a0<strong data-start=\"10226\" data-end=\"10258\">\u201cYour attitude has changed.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"10260\" data-end=\"10268\">Perhaps, before deciding that, their attitude has changed, rather ask three questions:<\/p>\n<p data-section-id=\"1rw9c6r\" data-start=\"10318\" data-end=\"10364\"><strong>1. Is this actually a performance problem?<\/strong>\u00a0Do they lack a skill, preparation or understanding?<\/p>\n<p data-section-id=\"1dwsz7j\" data-start=\"10419\" data-end=\"10456\">2. <strong>Is this a developmental issue?<\/strong>\u00a0Could age, maturation, identity, emotional regulation or independence be influencing what we&#8217;re seeing?<\/p>\n<p data-section-id=\"11nbko4\" data-start=\"10563\" data-end=\"10617\">3. <strong>Is something happening socially or emotionally<\/strong>?\u00a0Team relationships, friendships, school pressure, family circumstances and belonging can all enter the sporting environment.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"10745\" data-end=\"10774\"><strong data-start=\"10745\" data-end=\"10774\">Behaviour is information.\u00a0<\/strong>Get curious before getting critical.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<h3 data-section-id=\"1nor6tg\" data-start=\"10814\" data-end=\"10833\"><em>The golden rule is to clarify &#8211; Ask before you tell<\/em><\/h3>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h3 data-section-id=\"v40e36\" data-start=\"10928\" data-end=\"10955\"><\/h3>\n<h3 data-section-id=\"v40e36\" data-start=\"10928\" data-end=\"10955\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-2599 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/sportmindcoach.co.za\/academy\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/After-the-Game_-The-Car-Ride-Home-crop-1024x633.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"900\" height=\"556\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sportmindcoach.co.za\/academy\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/After-the-Game_-The-Car-Ride-Home-crop-1024x633.png 1024w, https:\/\/sportmindcoach.co.za\/academy\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/After-the-Game_-The-Car-Ride-Home-crop-768x475.png 768w, https:\/\/sportmindcoach.co.za\/academy\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/After-the-Game_-The-Car-Ride-Home-crop-600x371.png 600w, https:\/\/sportmindcoach.co.za\/academy\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/After-the-Game_-The-Car-Ride-Home-crop-81x50.png 81w, https:\/\/sportmindcoach.co.za\/academy\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/After-the-Game_-The-Car-Ride-Home-crop.png 1402w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px\" \/><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"10957\" data-end=\"11079\">For many young athletes, one of the most emotionally significant parts of competition happens <strong data-start=\"11051\" data-end=\"11078\">after the final whistle<\/strong>.\u00a0<strong>The car ride home.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"11101\" data-end=\"11132\">Parents naturally want to help.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"11134\" data-end=\"11156\">But questions such as:\u00a0<strong data-start=\"11158\" data-end=\"11249\">\u201cWhy didn&#8217;t you pass?\u201d or \u201cWhy weren&#8217;t you concentrating?\u201d or \u201cYou should have won that\u201d,\u00a0<\/strong>can turn the car into another coaching environment.\u00a0Your child may already have had a coach giving them feedback and what they may need now is a parents support rather than feedback.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"11383\" data-end=\"11387\">Rather Try:<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"11389\" data-end=\"11500\"><strong data-start=\"11389\" data-end=\"11500\">\u201cDid you enjoy it?\u201d<br data-start=\"11410\" data-end=\"11413\" \/>\u201cWhat did you learn?\u201d<br data-start=\"11434\" data-end=\"11437\" \/>\u201cWhat are you proud of?\u201d<br data-start=\"11461\" data-end=\"11464\" \/>\u201cAnything you want to talk about?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"11502\" data-end=\"11509\">Or ask: <strong data-start=\"11513\" data-end=\"11567\">\u201cDo you want me to listen, help, or just be here?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"11569\" data-end=\"11601\">Sometimes they will want advice and sometimes they will want to talk, but sometimes they may the need silence to process by themselves.\u00a0<strong>Learning the difference is part of parenting an athlete.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h1 class=\"PDq2pG_selectionAnchorContainer\" data-section-id=\"6itmd2\" data-start=\"12652\" data-end=\"12679\">What Should Never Change?<\/h1>\n<p data-start=\"12681\" data-end=\"12750\">Although the parent&#8217;s role changes, one thing should remain constant.\u00a0<strong data-start=\"12752\" data-end=\"12850\">Your relationship with your child should never feel conditional on their sporting performance.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"12852\" data-end=\"12870\"><strong>They need to know the are safe and loved<\/strong> no matter win or losing a game, if they selected or not, or if they had the worst game of the season.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"13117\" data-end=\"13158\">That security doesn&#8217;t make athletes soft.\u00a0It can give them the emotional foundation from which they become brave enough to compete, fail, learn and try again.<\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"13278\" data-end=\"13281\" \/>\n<h1 data-section-id=\"xtnwie\" data-start=\"13283\" data-end=\"13325\">Develop the Athlete. Develop the Person.<\/h1>\n<p data-start=\"13327\" data-end=\"13377\">Youth sport gives us an extraordinary opportunity to develop the adults of the future. Sport can develop confidence, teach emotional control, build resilience and develop discipline.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"13494\" data-end=\"13609\">We can teach young people how to handle pressure, communicate, recover from disappointment and take responsibility.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"13611\" data-end=\"13701\">But we need to remember that <strong data-start=\"13640\" data-end=\"13700\">the athlete and the person are developing simultaneously<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"13611\" data-end=\"13701\">So the next time your child or athlete struggles, resist immediately asking:\u00a0<strong data-start=\"13781\" data-end=\"13823\">\u201cHow do I get them to perform better?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"13611\" data-end=\"13701\"><strong data-start=\"13781\" data-end=\"13823\">Rather ask: <\/strong><strong data-start=\"13833\" data-end=\"13903\">\u201cWhat might they need from me at this stage of their development?\u201d\u00a0<\/strong>That question can change the conversation and sometimes, it can change the athlete&#8217;s entire experience of sport.<\/p>\n<h2 data-section-id=\"ucl8zt\" data-start=\"14021\" data-end=\"14087\"><span role=\"text\"><strong data-start=\"14024\" data-end=\"14087\">Train the athlete. Understand the mind.
